What is HowsThisGoing?

HowsThisGoing is an AI chat bot tool. HowsThisGoing was a Slack standup bot that collected daily updates and produced daily, weekly and monthly shipped-work summaries, with GitHub integration and plain English querying of past standups. It is shutting down as of September 29, 2026, the bot has been removed from all workspaces, and existing data is retained on request.

HowsThisGoing was a Slack standup bot built by a solo developer, Kanishk, who wanted to answer a personal question: could one person build a product from scratch and get paid for it? The answer came in the form of a tool that asked team members a short set of questions each day, collected their replies inside Slack, and turned the accumulated answers into something a team could actually read. It was, according to its author, the first standup bot to also connect to GitHub, letting summaries reflect shipped work as well as what people said in their updates. The product generated daily, weekly and monthly summaries of what a team shipped. It also supported plain English questions about what people had written in their standups, powered by an embeddings and retrieval system built from scratch rather than assembled from an off the shelf framework. That combination is what made it different from a simple reminder bot: the value was meant to sit in the archived record and in the ability to query it later, not in the act of asking three questions a day. In practice the workflow was Slack native. A workspace installed the bot, it prompted members for updates on a schedule, and replies stayed in the channel where the team already worked. No separate dashboard or app needed to be opened. The intended audience was small to mid sized engineering teams that wanted lightweight status reporting and a searchable history of what changed, without adding another tool to the stack. The author notes that one team ran its standups on the tool every day for more than two years. That history now has a closing date. HowsThisGoing is shutting down as of September 29, 2026. Standups have stopped and the bot has been removed from every Slack workspace where it was installed. Existing data has not been deleted, and users who want a copy can email the founder directly. The founder has been candid that the product was not a commercial success, and that a bot asking three questions daily is no longer enough to compete. Anyone evaluating standup tools today should treat this as a discontinued option and look at active alternatives in the same space.

How do you use HowsThisGoing?

  1. 1Check whether your workspace is affected
The bot has already been removed from every Slack workspace it was installed in, so there is nothing to uninstall. Confirm with your team which channel previously hosted the standups.
  2. 2Decide whether you need a copy of your data
Nothing has been deleted, so past standup content is retained by the founder. Determine whether your team needs an archive before starting a replacement tool.
  3. 3Request your data by email
Send a message to kanishk@howsthisgoing.com asking for a copy of your workspace data or raising any question about the shutdown. There is no self serve export.
  4. 4Plan a replacement standup process
Because the tool cannot be reinstalled, pick an active Slack standup bot or return to manual async updates. Compare on GitHub style shipping summaries if that was the feature you relied on.
  5. 5Preserve your standup history elsewhere
If the archived standups matter, export or summarise the relevant channel history in Slack itself and store it with your team documentation before the data request window narrows.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Runs entirely inside Slack, so teams report status without opening another toolAI
  • Connected to GitHub, which let summaries reflect actual shipped work rather than self reported updates aloneAI
  • Offered natural language questions over standup history using a custom embeddings and retrieval systemAI
  • Produced daily, weekly and monthly summaries, giving longer term visibility than a single day's repliesAI
  • Had a multi year daily user, which is real evidence the core loop worked for some teamsAI

Cons

  • Discontinued: standups have stopped and the bot is removed from every workspace, so it cannot be adoptedAI
  • No self serve way to get data out; retrieval depends on emailing the founder before anything is lostAI
  • The founder states plainly that selling the product did not go well, which is a signal about commercial supportAI
  • A three question daily bot is acknowledged as insufficient against newer AI teammates that take action in SlackAI
  • Documentation and product pages are effectively gone, making any migration or archive work harderAI

Support

Support now runs through a single channel: email kanishk@howsthisgoing.com for a copy of your data or any question about the shutdown. No help centre or documentation remains online.

Integrations

Slack was the primary surface, with the bot installed directly into workspaces. A GitHub connection was added so standup summaries could reflect shipped work. Both are now inactive following the shutdown.

Features

Features as described by the founder: scheduled Slack standup prompts, daily, weekly and monthly summaries of what the team shipped, a GitHub connection so summaries reflected real commits and shipped work, and plain English querying of past standup replies using a hand built embeddings and retrieval system. The bot has since been removed from all workspaces.
