What is Metabot AI?

Metabot AI is an AI chat bot tool. Metabot AI brings natural language question answering, chart summaries, SQL generation, and semantic search into Metabase. Answers are inspectable, follow existing permissions, run against your own warehouse, and can use your own model provider key.

Metabot AI is the assistant layer inside Metabase, the open source business intelligence platform used by a large base of companies. It lets people ask questions about company data in plain language, receive charts and tables in return, and read an explanation of how each answer was assembled. The assistant builds its queries from the semantic layer and metadata defined in Data Studio rather than guessing at column names, so terms like annual recurring revenue resolve the same way for the AI as they do for the analytics team. The design priority is auditability. Every AI answer links back to the underlying query, which can be opened in a notebook editor or viewed as SQL and edited by hand. Access follows the permission rules already configured in Metabase, so a user cannot reach data through the assistant that they could not reach directly. Queries execute against the customer warehouse; Metabase does not ingest, store, or sync that data, which matters for teams with strict data boundaries or per-customer segregation. Beyond chat, Metabot offers one-click summaries of any chart or dashboard, AI-assisted SQL generation and debugging, and semantic search that matches dashboards and models by meaning rather than keyword. Organizations can bring their own model key (Anthropic, OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Mistral, OpenRouter, Microsoft Azure and others) and pay the provider directly, or use the managed service on Metabase Cloud. Administrators set access per user group, cap usage by token or message count, apply system prompts, and review conversation logs in a usage dashboard. Metabot also reaches Slack, an official MCP server, and an Agent Workspace API for custom agents, with embeddable AI components for customer-facing products. This suits data teams already on Metabase, and companies that want AI exploration without a separate LLM vendor holding their data. It is less suited to teams wanting a standalone chat tool, or to organizations with no semantic model in place, since answer quality tracks the richness of the definitions provided.

How do you use Metabot AI?

  1. 1Deploy Metabase with AI enabled
Start a Metabase instance, either through the hosted trial or the open source deployment path. AI features ship in every edition, including the free one.
  2. 2Connect your AI provider
In the AI settings, add a key for the provider you already use, or stay with the built-in model. The key can be switched later without rebuilding anything.
  3. 3Document your metrics in Data Studio
Add glossary definitions and verified models so the assistant resolves business terms consistently. The richer the semantic layer, the more reliable the generated queries.
  4. 4Set access and usage limits
Choose which user groups may ask questions, generate SQL, or use other AI features, then cap consumption by token or message count with a monthly ceiling.
  5. 5Ask, inspect, and verify
Put a question to Metabot in plain language, review the returned chart, then open the linked query to confirm the models and metrics behind the answer.
  6. 6Extend into Slack
Mention Metabot in a channel or direct message to ask questions, pull charts, upload a CSV, or set up alerts without opening the Metabase interface.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Every AI answer links to its query, so results can be inspected and edited in SQL or the notebook editorAI
  • Inherits existing Metabase permissions instead of adding a separate access layerAI
  • Works with your own model provider key, with no markup from Metabase and no AI tier or per-seat AI feeAI
  • Queries run against the warehouse, with no data ingestion or syncing by MetabaseAI
  • Available across cloud, self-hosted, open source, Slack, and an MCP server for external AI clientsAI

Cons

  • Output quality depends heavily on a well maintained semantic layer, so thin metadata produces weak answersAI
  • AI is inseparable from the Metabase platform, so it is not a standalone option for teams on another BI toolAI
  • Advanced features such as semantic search and access controls are limited to Pro and Enterprise editionsAI
  • Bring-your-own-key setups push provider configuration, cost tracking, and key management onto your teamAI
  • Self-hosted deployments require someone to manage provider settings and watch token consumptionAI
