What is Jam SQL Studio?

Jam SQL Studio is a free, cross-platform SQL IDE for SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle and SQLite, built as an Azure Data Studio replacement. It pairs a full query editor with execution plans, schema and data compare, notebooks and a local MCP server that lets AI agents inspect and query databases under explicit approval.

Jam SQL Studio is a desktop SQL IDE that connects to SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle and SQLite through one editor. It is positioned as the successor to Azure Data Studio, which Microsoft retired in February 2026, and it runs on macOS, Windows and Linux with a consistent interface across all three. The pitch is straightforward: teams that lost their long-standing client get the same connection files, .sql scripts and .ipynb notebooks back without relearning a workflow. The practical work happens in the editor. Smart IntelliSense adapts to the connected engine, a Table Explorer allows inline editing with foreign key lookups, and per tab transaction control lets a developer roll back a single window without touching the rest of the session. Beyond query writing, the tool covers visual execution plans (tree and graph), schema compare with generated ALTER and CREATE sync scripts, data compare with row level diffs, built-in charts, and a Database Blueprint that stores schema as a Git versioned folder of .sql files. DBA functions such as session browsing, a performance dashboard, backup and restore, and filegroup or tablespace management are present for four engines. The AI layer is the differentiator, and it is deliberately conservative. A local MCP server on 127.0.0.1 exposes connection and UI control tools to external agents under bearer token auth, with no queries run by default and writes gated behind per statement approval. An AI Workspace generates CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md context files plus a schema export so agents understand the database before writing anything, and an in-app sidebar connects to a locally installed Claude Code CLI using the user's own subscription. All AI features ship disabled. It suits developers, analysts and DBAs who work across several engines or who want agent tooling without handing a remote service their credentials. Compared with DBeaver, DataGrip, Navicat and TablePlus, the edge is the MCP integration and the free personal tier; the tradeoff is a younger product with a shorter track record than the incumbents.

How do you use Jam SQL Studio?

  1. 1Install the desktop app
Pick the macOS, Windows or Linux build and install it. No account is created during setup, and the app opens straight to the connections screen.
Jam SQL Studio — Install the desktop app
  2. 2Create your first connection
Add a connection for SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle or SQLite and supply the host, credentials and database name. SQLite connections can point at a local file instead.
Jam SQL Studio — Create your first connection
  3. 3Write and run a query
Open a query tab, use IntelliSense to autocomplete tables and columns, then execute the statement. Results arrive in a grid you can filter, sort and export to CSV, JSON or XLSX.
Jam SQL Studio — Write and run a query
  4. 4Import existing data or scripts
Load CSV, Excel or JSON files into a new or existing table, or open your saved .sql and .ipynb files directly to keep working where you left off.
Jam SQL Studio — Import existing data or scripts
  5. 5Enable the AI workspace if you want it
Turn on AI Integrations in settings, then open an AI Workspace to generate CLAUDE.md context files and start the local MCP server. Read-only query execution is the default until you raise permissions.
Jam SQL Studio — Enable the AI workspace if you want it
  6. 6Migrate from Azure Data Studio
Use Import to read your old settings.json, review the connections before accepting them, and copy your .sql files across. Shortcut mappings carry over.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free personal tier with no account required, plus a 14-day Pro trial without a cardAI
  • Six database engines in one consistent editor, including Oracle in thin mode with no client installAI
  • One-click import of Azure Data Studio settings.json, bringing connections across with duplicates uncheckedAI
  • Local MCP server stays on 127.0.0.1 with bearer tokens, audit logs and no queries run by defaultAI
  • Genuinely broad feature set for a free tool: schema compare, data compare, execution plans and chartingAI

Cons

  • The browser demo only handles SQLite, so the multi-engine experience requires a desktop installAI
  • AI chat depends on a separate Claude Code CLI installation and a Claude subscription you already pay forAI
  • No hosted or cloud version: connections, schema and query history live on each machineAI
  • The product is young and the team small, so the long term support track record is unproven next to DBeaver or DataGripAI
  • Microsoft Entra ID authentication and DBA tooling cover a subset of engines, which matters in mixed estatesAI
