Weftwake

A text adventure where an AI narrator writes the world back

What is Weftwake?

Weftwake is an 18+ text adventure where you write what your character does and an AI narrator writes the world around it, remembers what you made true, and dreams a keepsake illustration each night. Free play gives 40 turns with no account; a Patreon style subscription adds 600 turns a month.

Weftwake is a browser based text adventure in which the player writes the protagonist's actions and an AI narrator builds the surrounding world in response. A single move or several paragraphs both work: state that the station is dark and cold, and the story holds that as true from then on. The narrator answers with place, weather, strangers and complications, and it is under no obligation to be kind. Ferries leave with your luggage aboard, doors stay locked, and people bargain or lie. The design leans on consequence rather than wish fulfilment. Each chapter poses a question and its ending names a price, although chapters can be switched off entirely for a continuous world with no questions to answer. An interrupt feature lets a player start typing mid generation, cutting the narrator off and discarding text that was never read. A slash command system answers direct questions inside the fiction (yes, no, yes but, no and), and travel elsewhere or forward in time advances the world while the player is away. Between sessions the loom takes over. Overnight it reads the story, decides which threads return, and produces a numbered plate, an illustrated keepsake for the chapter, plus an optional morning letter at most three times a week. A woven cloth image and an adaptive score of recorded strings, piano, harp, guitar and winds round out the presentation, and five reading themes restyle the page as film title cards, print manuscript, cyanotype, newspaper or amber terminal. It suits adults who want collaborative fiction with real friction and memory rather than a chatbot that agrees with everything. Free play gives 40 turns total with no account, and a Patron subscription raises that to 600 turns a month. Weftwake is explicitly 18+, keeps stories private, and states plainly that narrator text and plates are AI generated within a hand designed engine.

How do you use Weftwake?

  1. 1Start a story without an account
Open the play page and begin writing. The first 40 turns are free, need no sign up and no card, and are shared across every story you start.
  2. 2Write your first move
Enter what your character does, says or notices, from one line to several paragraphs. The narrator treats anything you assert as true and builds from it.
  3. 3Push back and interrupt
Expect refusal and cost rather than compliance. If the narrator is heading somewhere you dislike, start typing while it writes and it stops where you were reading.
  4. 4Use slash commands to probe the world
Ask the story a direct question with a slash command and get an answer framed as yes, no, yes but or no and. Travel commands move you elsewhere or later while time passes.
  5. 5Read the safety notes before dark material
Weftwake is for adults and some stories turn grim. The safety page explains how the system pauses when a line stops being about the story and where to find help.
  6. 6Come back for the morning letter
After a session, the loom writes a dream, decides which threads return and draws a numbered plate. Opt in to the morning letter for at most three emails a week.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Narrator tracks places, people and loose threads across sessions, so earlier choices keep matteringAI
  • The interrupt feature stops generation mid sentence and discards unread text, giving the player real authorial controlAI
  • Free tier needs no account or card, so the writing style can be tested before payingAI
  • Five distinct reading themes and an adaptive recorded score make long sessions easier on the eye and earAI
  • Overnight dreams produce numbered plates and a recap letter, which helps returning after a breakAI

Cons

  • The free allowance is 40 turns in total across all stories, which is closer to a demo than a usable free tierAI
  • 600 turns a month works out to roughly 20 a day, and heavy writers will need to buy extra packsAI
  • Payments run through Patreon, so managing a subscription means a second account outside the siteAI
  • Only one place to get help is referenced on the homepage, a feedback link, with no documented help centre or APIAI
  • No native mobile apps are described; play happens in the browser, which is awkward for long sessions on a phoneAI
