What is Novu?

Novu is open-source notification and AI agent communication infrastructure. It routes messages across in-app Inbox, email, SMS, push, WhatsApp, Slack, Teams and Telegram from one workflow, and lets agents hold two-way conversations with customers.

Novu is open-source communication infrastructure aimed at product teams and developers who need to reach users, and increasingly let AI agents talk to them, without wiring up each messaging provider by hand. It is split into two parts. Novu Notify handles product notifications across an in-app Inbox, email, SMS, push and chat. Novu Connect places AI agents inside the channels customers already use, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp Business and Telegram. In practice, a developer defines a workflow once and triggers it from application code. Novu then takes care of routing, conditions, delays and fallbacks across the chosen channels. The in-app Inbox ships as prebuilt, composable components for React, Next.js and Remix, with real-time updates, unread counts, tabs, filters, snoozing, localization and custom styling. End users get their own preference controls, including quiet hours, while digests and rate limits bundle several alerts into one and cap how often anyone is pinged. The agent side works as a two-way conversation. A notification can open a thread in the user's preferred channel, where an agent continues the exchange. Each message carries the full conversation history and state, so the agent does not need its own session store. For sensitive actions such as refunds, provisioning, deployments or MCP tool calls, human approval can be requested inside the same conversation before anything runs. Setup begins by picking a channel and an agent framework (the homepage demonstrates Slack with the Vercel AI SDK), then running a CLI command or pasting a generated prompt. Among alternatives, Novu sits between building notification plumbing in-house and adopting a closed, hosted messaging suite. Its open-source code, self-hosting option and use of existing push, SMS and chat providers appeal to teams with data-control needs, and the site lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA compliance for regulated environments. Its customer-support relevance comes mostly from the agent conversation features rather than a ticketing or helpdesk product.
