What is SkiCoach?

SkiCoach is an audio analysis tool. An offline iOS and Android app that uses a phone's own motion sensors and GPS to score ski technique from 0 to 100, reports turn balance and rhythm, and delivers voice coaching tips through headphones.

SkiCoach is a mobile app that turns the accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and GPS already inside a phone into a ski and snowboard technique coach. Tap record, drop the handset into a front pants pocket, and the app reads each run in real time while voice tips play through headphones. There is no account, no login and no cloud upload: every sensor stream is processed on the device, so the app runs in airplane mode and the session database stays in the app sandbox. Output is deliberately narrow. Every run produces four things: a 0-100 Technique Score, a left versus right turn balance reading, a turn rhythm in BPM, and one concrete next-run focus. The score is built from three weighted parts: edge control and turn quality at 40 percent each, plus a 20 percent speed component that is adjusted to the rider's declared level. When there is no GPS signal, as at Ski Dubai, Snow Abu Dhabi, SNOWworld Landgraaf or Alpincenter Bottrop, indoor mode drops speed and splits the weighting 50/50. The app is honest about its limits. It does not use the camera, cannot read edge angles without boot sensors, cannot see pole plants or snow conditions, and does not estimate calories. Fall detection uses a dual high-G and rotation threshold and prompts a check-in rather than calling emergency services. The score is a relative indicator, so expect roughly 5 to 10 points of variation between runs. Consistent pocket placement is the main control on data quality, and technique analysis needs the screen on because iOS and Android limit motion sensors when the device is locked. SkiCoach fits the same general space as hardware coaches that rely on boot inserts, but trades sensor precision for zero extra gear and no recurring fee. Season data is exportable as CSV, GPX (for a manual Strava upload) or JSON. Winter pricing sits alongside a permanently free two-run-per-day tier.

How do you use SkiCoach?

  1. 1Install the app and choose your skill level
Download SkiCoach from the iOS App Store or Google Play. Set your level to beginner, intermediate, advanced or expert, because the speed component of the score is calibrated against it.
  2. 2Position the phone consistently
Front pants pocket at the thigh gives the best readings. A chest pocket or arm band also works. Avoid backpacks, loose pockets, hands and boots, and use the same spot every run for comparable scores.
  3. 3Start a recording and ski
Tap Record, lock in your position and ski normally. Sensors track turns and speed while audio tips play through headphones at a simple, moderate or intensive rate.
  4. 4Review the post-run card
After each run, read the 0-100 Technique Score, left versus right turn balance, rhythm in BPM and the single next-run focus, then apply that tip on the next lift.
  5. 5Switch on indoor mode at a venue
At a supported indoor slope, enter the facility code so the barometer handles run detection and the score reweights to edge control and turn quality only.
  6. 6Export or share your season
Send runs out as GPX for a manual Strava upload, CSV for spreadsheets or JSON for custom analysis. Delete everything at any time from Settings with Delete All Data.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • All sensor analysis runs on the device, so it works in airplane mode with no account or cloud uploadAI
  • Free tier is permanent and includes fall detection plus indoor mode, not just a sampleAI
  • Score methodology is published and weighted openly, with skill-level calibration for beginners through expertsAI
  • Indoor mode covers GPS-free venues like Ski Dubai and SNOWworld, letting users train in summerAI
  • No subscription anywhere: the Season Pass is a single non-renewing purchase and lifetime tiers are one-timeAI

Cons

  • Cannot measure edge angles, pole plant timing or snow conditions without additional sensorsAI
  • Technique analysis requires the screen to stay on, which drains battery on cold daysAI
  • Scores drift by 5 to 10 points across phone models, pocket placement and slope conditions, so cross-run comparison is looseAI
  • No automatic emergency calling and no heart rate or calorie data, since fall detection is assistive onlyAI
  • Advanced features such as GPS Run Replay and the PDF report are locked behind the ELITE tierAI
