What is Acurio?

Acurio is an academic research tool. Acurio verifies thesis bibliographies against five academic registries and checks each cited claim against the original source passage, producing supported, partial or unsupported findings with written explanations and Word export. A free bibliography check needs no account; full citation review and examiner-style thesis reports are one-time purchases.

Acurio is a citation checking service built for academic theses, from bachelor's work to doctoral dissertations. It runs two distinct checks. First it verifies that each bibliography entry actually exists, querying Crossref, OpenAlex, DataCite, arXiv and DOAJ to flag fabricated references, wrong publication years and papers that have been retracted. Second, once the student uploads the source PDFs, it reads the passage behind each in-text citation and places the original wording next to the claim, so the match can be judged rather than assumed. In practice the workflow follows the sequence a supervisor would use. A free quick check handles the bibliography alone: upload a PDF, a Word file, BibTeX or a pasted reference list, with no account required. A registered account then extends the review to 15 citations at no cost, and paid analysis covers the full thesis. Each judged citation is marked supported, partial or unsupported, and every finding comes with a written explanation of what the source does or does not establish, plus a suggested fix. Results can be read in the browser or exported as comments directly into the Word document the student already works in. The core citation check is one part of a wider offering. Rich Review produces an examiner-style assessment of the whole thesis, measured against the student's stated goal and optionally against a grading rubric, pointing out argument gaps, missing methodology sections and rule breaches. A separate defence preparation tool generates likely examiner questions with chapter links and answer outlines. Pricing is one-time and credit based rather than a subscription, and the citation portion starts at USD 11. Acurio is aimed at students writing a thesis without close line-by-line supervision, particularly those working across large bibliographies where sampling by an examiner is likely. It sits alongside reference managers and plagiarism checkers but addresses a different failure mode: a quote that does not support the sentence it is attached to. The company is Swiss, files are hosted in Germany, and the site states that uploaded theses are not used to train models and can be deleted on request.

How do you use Acurio?

  1. 1Run the free bibliography check
Upload the reference list as PDF, Word or BibTeX, or paste it as text. No account is needed, and Acurio reports which entries exist, which have wrong metadata and which are retracted.

  2. 2Create an account to extend the check
Registration unlocks 15 citations at no cost, which is enough to see how the passage comparison behaves on your own sources before committing to credits.
  3. 3Upload source PDFs for the cited claims
Add the full texts behind your in-text citations. Acurio locates the relevant passage for each claim and sets the original wording beside your sentence.
  4. 4Read the findings and correct the thesis
Work through the supported, partial and unsupported verdicts, using the written explanation for each to decide whether to revise the claim or change the source.
  5. 5Export comments into Word
Send the report back as comments in your document so each finding sits next to the sentence it concerns, then re-run the check after revisions.
  6. 6Optionally add Rich Review and defence prep
For a whole-thesis assessment, Rich Review measures chapters against your stated goal and rubric. Defence questions with answer outlines are sold separately in the Thesis and Dissertation packs.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Combines existence checks across Crossref, OpenAlex, DataCite, arXiv and DOAJ with passage-level source comparison, which covers both fabricated references and misused quotesAI
  • Findings include a written reason for each verdict and can be exported as Word comments, so revisions happen in the document the student already usesAI
  • Free bibliography check with no account required, and 15 citations free after registration, which lets students test accuracy before payingAI
  • One-time credit pricing rather than a subscription suits a tool used intensively for a few months and then not at allAI
  • Hosted in Germany with a stated policy of no model training on uploaded theses and on-demand deletion, which addresses a common concern about uploading unpublished workAI

Cons

  • Passage-level checking depends on the student supplying source PDFs, so paywalled or print-only sources may end up verified for existence but not for accurate quotationAI
  • Pricing is credit based and varies with thesis length and the number of reviews, which makes the total cost hard to predict before startingAI
  • Word comment export is the only document integration described; there is no live plugin for Word or reference managers, so the workflow is upload, review, re-uploadAI
  • Verdicts on whether a source supports a claim involve judgement, and a partial or unsupported label still needs a human to decide whether to rewrite the sentence or swap the citationAI
  • No visible institutional licensing or supervisor dashboard, so a department wanting cohort-level oversight has no described route to itAI
