Each card presents a self-contained world: a premise, a cast of characters, and a starting situation that the underlying language model continues as the player types actions and dialogue. The catalog spans dozens of genre tags, from romance, fantasy and slice of life to horror, cyberpunk, isekai and superhero, so the library functions more like a shelf of choose-your-own-adventure books than a single game. The scenarios are authored by users rather than a central studio. Some are compact one-scene setups, such as a neighbour asking for an unusual favour or a stranger in a grocery store asking you to play along. Others are large sandboxes with character creators, faction systems and hundreds of named NPCs, like the Forgotten Realms or Marvel Universe entries. Popularity signals are visible on each card: play counts in the millions, bookmark totals and a gem marker for featured work. Sorting defaults to trending, with genre and time filters available to narrow the 60 results shown at load. In practice, a player opens a scenario card, reads the setup, and starts the story. The AI responds to free-form input, so the same scenario can be replayed in different directions. Creators write the framing text and update their scenarios over time, sometimes adding scripts that change how the model narrates or tracks characters. AI Dungeon sits at the roleplay and interactive-fiction end of the AI tools market, closer to text adventure games and character chat apps than to story-writing assistants. It is beginner-friendly because no prompt engineering is needed to start, but the quality of any individual scenario depends entirely on its author, and the library mixes polished world-building with thin one-joke setups.
