What is Ellie Docs?

Ellie Docs is a developer tool that helps docs that write themselves from your code. Ellie Docs connects to a GitHub repository, drafts a help centre with real screenshots of the running app, and keeps articles current by checking each merged pull request.

Ellie Docs is a documentation tool built around a single idea: your code already contains the information your help centre needs. It connects to a GitHub repository, reads the code, runs the app in a sandbox, and maps routes and features so it can work out what the product actually does. From that map it drafts help articles and captures logged-in screenshots of the real interface, then publishes them to a hosted help centre on your own domain. The maintenance loop is the part that separates it from a conventional knowledge base. Every merged pull request is checked against existing articles, and when a change makes an article stale, Ellie flags the specific problem and drafts a replacement for a human to review. The same release awareness feeds a changelog: related commits are grouped into one entry, noise is filtered out, and work that has not shipped is held back. Paid tiers add an API reference generated from the code, including cases where no OpenAPI spec exists. It fits small product teams that ship often but never get round to documentation, particularly those building on Lovable, Bolt or v0, since the source only needs to be in GitHub and nobody has to read the code themselves. Existing content is not thrown away: articles can be imported from Intercom, Zendesk, GitBook or Notion as editable drafts. Every published help centre also carries an Ask AI assistant that answers only from those published docs, plus instant search. An MCP connection lets teams draft and review updates from Claude or Cursor. Compared with GitBook, Mintlify or Beamer, the pitch is consolidation: help centre, changelog and API reference in one subscription, with AI answers included instead of sold as an add-on. The trade-off is the coupling. The whole model depends on code in GitHub, English-language self-serve documentation, and a willingness to let drafts, not writers, set the first version of every article.

How do you use Ellie Docs?

  1. 1Create an account without a card
Sign up with Google, Microsoft, GitHub or email. No payment details are needed, and you get 14 days of Growth features before choosing a plan or dropping to Free.
  2. 2Connect your repository
Point Ellie at your GitHub repo. It maps routes and features, infers what the product is for, and runs the app in a sandbox to capture logged-in screenshots.
  3. 3Import what you already have
If you run an existing help centre on Intercom, Zendesk, GitBook or Notion, connect it. Each article arrives as an editable draft you can keep, improve or replace.
  4. 4Review the first draft
Open the editor to work with callouts, images and video, or use the chat panel to describe a change and let Ellie draft it. Check the linked code sources behind each claim.
  5. 5Publish and maintain
Publish to your own domain or a elliedocs.com subdomain. From then on, every merged pull request is judged against your articles and stale ones are flagged with drafts attached.
  6. 6See it working first
The live help centre at help.tryellie.com is written and maintained by Ellie Docs itself, and a 20-minute walkthrough can be booked if a demo is preferred over self-serve.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Drafts articles directly from the codebase and captures logged-in screenshots of the running app, so the first documentation pass needs no writing sprintAI
  • Flags stale articles on merged pull requests and attaches evidence, which turns documentation maintenance into a review task rather than a rewriteAI
  • Changelog entries are generated from shipped commits, with unreleased work held back until it is liveAI
  • AI answers, the changelog and unlimited editors are included on every plan, avoiding per-seat costs and paid add-onsAI
  • Existing content imports from Intercom, Zendesk, GitBook or Notion as editable drafts, so prior writing is not lostAI

Cons

  • Requires a GitHub repository, so teams with other source control or no meaningful codebase get little from the core featureAI
  • No per-article export or static site option is described, leaving teams reliant on the hosted platform and own-domain publishingAI
  • AI answers are capped by plan (50, 500, 2,000 or 10,000 monthly), and busy help centres may outgrow the cheaper tiersAI
  • API reference generation is limited to the Growth plan and above, so lower tiers miss one of the headline featuresAI
  • Editorial control still sits with a human reviewer, which means stale-doc flags are only useful if someone acts on themAI
