What is Mochify?

Mochify is a background tool. Mochify compresses and converts images and PDFs from plain-English prompts, via web app, CLI, local or hosted MCP server, REST API and Chrome extension. It includes background removal and keeps image bytes out of agent context.

Mochify is a compression and conversion engine for images and PDFs, with video and audio conversion handled in the browser. Instead of format pickers and quality sliders, the user describes the outcome in plain English, such as converting to WebP at a set width or stripping location data, and the tool works out the parameters for each file. Background removal, smart cropping, EXIF stripping and HDR gain-map handling sit alongside the usual format conversions. The same engine is reachable through six surfaces: a web app, a single Rust command-line binary, a local MCP server for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and other stdio clients, a hosted MCP connector using OAuth, a REST API, and a Chrome extension. That spread makes it relevant to ecommerce teams optimizing product photos for Core Web Vitals, agencies batching client deliverables, creators who want private resizing, and developers wiring image handling into build scripts, CI or agent pipelines. In practice, the natural-language layer ("Magic Flow") uses a language model to parse the prompt, then hands execution to the native engine. Supported inputs include JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC/HEIF and JPEG XL, with outputs in JPEG (via Jpegli), PNG, WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL. A distinctive design choice is that the local MCP server and CLI read files from disk, so only paths and metadata cross the agent's context window rather than base64 image bytes. Originals are streamed through server RAM and discarded, and a Docker guide covers self-hosting for a fully on-machine setup. Among alternatives, Mochify sits between consumer drag-and-drop optimizers and developer-oriented image APIs. Its angle is agent-friendliness and a single engine across every entry point, with MCP and API access included on the free tier. Three files can be processed without an account, and paid plans and a one-off Day Pass raise monthly allowances, file size limits and batch size.

How do you use Mochify?

  1. 1Try the web app
Drop up to three files into the web app without an account and type what you want, for example removing the background or converting to WebP at 1200px.
Mochify — Try the web app
  2. 2Create a free account
Register without a card to get 25 images a month at up to 20 MB each, plus access to the CLI, MCP and API.
Mochify — Create a free account
  3. 3Install the CLI
Install the Rust binary with Homebrew (brew tap getmochify/mochify, then brew install mochify) and run mochify auth login to sign in.
    Mochify — Install the CLI
  4. 4Connect it to Claude
Add a mochify entry running the serve command to the Claude Desktop MCP config and restart. Then ask Claude to compress a file by path.
Mochify — Connect it to Claude
  5. 5Automate with the API
Use the bearer token from the account to send images to the REST API from cURL, JavaScript or Python for scripted bulk work.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Natural-language prompts replace format pickers and quality sliders, and work for one file or a whole batchAI
  • Local MCP and CLI pass only file paths to agents, keeping image bytes out of the context windowAI
  • One engine across web app, CLI, MCP, REST API and Chrome extension, with developer access on the free planAI
  • Zero-retention processing: originals are streamed through RAM and discarded, and video never leaves the browserAI
  • Modern output formats including AVIF, WebP, JPEG XL and Jpegli JPEG, plus PDF recompressionAI

Cons

  • Free tier is small: 3 files without an account and 25 images a month with oneAI
  • Video and audio conversion only works in the web app, not through the CLI, MCP or APIAI
  • Magic Flow depends on a language model interpreting the prompt, so results may need rechecking on edge casesAI
  • Output formats are limited to JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL, so GIF, SVG or TIFF are not listedAI
  • Hosted MCP keeps compressed output on a temporary URL for up to five minutes, unlike the local serverAI
