What is Torii Translate?

Torii Translate translates raw manga, manhwa and webtoons directly in the browser or through a web app for uploaded files. It inpaints away the original lettering, letters the translation into each bubble, and includes a full editor for fixing lines, restyling text and batch processing whole chapters.

Torii Translate is an AI image translator built around a specific, demanding use case: reading manga, manhwa and webtoons that have never been released in your language. It ships as a browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox (including Android), as a Safari app for iPhone and iPad, and as a web app for files you already have on disk. Hover any comic image on a reader site, click the torii gate icon, and the page comes back in your language. The output is the differentiator. Rather than dropping opaque text boxes over the artwork, Torii uses AI inpainting to erase the original lettering, then letters the translation into each bubble at a size that fits. A built-in editor lets you move, resize, rotate and restyle any text box, swap in comic lettering fonts or your own font files, brush over a missed bubble for manual OCR, warp text along curves, and apply gradients or shadows to titles and sound effects. Find and replace works across every page of a chapter at once. Translation quality is configurable rather than fixed. Users pick the underlying model (Claude, Gemini, GPT, DeepSeek, Grok and others), write custom prompts to preserve honorifics or tone, attach a glossary, and rely on context sharing to carry names and plot terms from page to page. Any language pair works across 140+ languages, with the source detected automatically, including vertical Japanese text. Long webtoon strips are handled as a single image at full resolution, so a 60,000 pixel chapter does not need slicing first. Bulk work happens in the web app: upload images, ZIPs or PDFs, translate a whole chapter in one pass, optionally clean or colorize it, and download as ZIP, PDF or PSD. Compared with free OCR screen translators, the gap is the lettering and the editor; compared with manual scanlation, the gap is speed. It is still machine translation, so a human pass remains wise for anything published.

How do you use Torii Translate?

  1. 1Install the extension or open the web app
Add Torii to Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Firefox from the browser store, or get the Safari app from the App Store. For your own files, open the web app instead.
  2. 2Translate a page while you read
On any site that shows comics as images, hover an image and click the torii gate in its corner. Switch on auto-translate if you want pages translated as you scroll.
  3. 3Upload your own chapter
In the web app, upload individual images, a ZIP or a PDF of a chapter. Every page translates in one pass, and cleaning or colorizing can be applied to the whole batch.
  4. 4Fix and restyle the lettering
Open the built-in editor to move, resize or rewrite any bubble. Brush over missed text for manual OCR, pick a comic font, and use find and replace for names across the chapter.
  5. 5Tune the model and prompts
Choose which AI model handles the series, write a custom prompt to set tone or keep honorifics, and save a glossary so terms stay consistent from page to page.
  6. 6Export and check pricing
Download finished chapters as ZIP, PDF or PSD, and review the credit packs on the pricing page to work out the cost of a full scanlation project.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Cleans and re-letters pages with AI inpainting instead of pasting text boxes over the artAI
  • Built-in editor covers manual OCR, font swapping, text warping and chapter-wide find and replaceAI
  • Handles very tall webtoon strips as one image at full resolution, with no slicing requiredAI
  • Model choice and custom prompts with glossary and context sharing keep names and tone consistentAI
  • Extension and web app share one account and credit balance across desktop, Android and iOSAI

Cons

  • Credits are consumed per translation, so heavy reading or bulk chapter work costs money on top of the free allowanceAI
  • Output is machine translation, and the site itself notes it will not match a skilled human localizationAI
  • Each page depends on an external AI provider, so prompt quality and model choice materially affect resultsAI
  • The most useful features (bulk chapters, colorizing, the editor) assume you will learn a fairly dense interfaceAI
  • Translating sites you read online relies on the extension, so browser support varies by platformAI
