What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is a coding tool. Anthropic's agentic coding tool that understands a codebase, edits files, runs commands and tests, and opens pull requests. It runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile, GitHub and Slack, and is included in Claude Pro and Max plans.

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool, built to take on whole tasks rather than offer line-by-line suggestions. It reads a repository, drafts a plan, asks clarifying questions, edits files, runs commands and tests, and keeps working when something breaks. The scope runs from a single bug fix to migrations and refactors that stretch across hours or days. The audience is working developers and engineering teams. Access is spread across the places code actually gets written: a terminal install, native extensions for VS Code (including Cursor and Devin Desktop) and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, the web, iOS and Android apps, GitHub, and Slack for kicking off tasks from a conversation. For newcomers to a codebase, it uses agentic search to map structure and dependencies without anyone hand-picking context files. For daily delivery, it works with GitHub, GitLab and ordinary command line tools to read issues, write code, run tests and open pull requests. In practice, a user describes the job in plain language and reviews what comes back: files read, commands run, diffs applied. Recent additions point toward longer, less supervised runs. Auto mode is now the default on Pro, Max and Team plans, letting sessions continue while still catching risky commands. Projects on the desktop app group related sessions so several agents can be supervised at once, self-hosted environments (in public beta) run sessions inside a company's own network, and artifacts turn in-progress work into shareable live previews. Among coding assistants, Claude Code sits at the delegation end of the spectrum, closer to handing a ticket to a teammate than to accepting autocomplete. It is bundled with Anthropic's Claude subscriptions rather than sold on its own, so usage limits on the chosen plan shape how much work an individual can push through. Customer stories on the site include Ramp, Intercom and Notion.
