What is DashVox?

DashVox is a voice-first IDE that lets developers run, steer and review Claude Code and Codex sessions over SSH by voice, with spoken output, from an iPhone, Apple Watch or CarPlay. The backend is free to self-host, with a managed cloud option.

DashVox is a voice-first IDE for AI coding agents. Rather than typing into an editor, a developer speaks requests to Claude Code or Codex sessions that run on their own machine, and the app connects to that machine over SSH. Agent output is summarized and read aloud, approvals are given verbally, and the screen is optional by design. The iOS app includes native CarPlay support, and spoken updates and replies reach Apple Watch. An Android version is listed as coming soon. The tool is aimed at developers and on-call engineers who want to keep working away from a desk: on a commute, on a walk, or when an alert arrives and a laptop is not within reach. In practice the user adds a dev machine under SSH profiles, opens the app on a phone, in the car or on a wearable, and speaks. Voice is transcribed in real time, the reply is spoken back, and actions such as approving a migration can be confirmed by voice or with a single CarPlay control. A phone-on-the-dash driving mode works without CarPlay. An Agent Mode lets the assistant manage several coding sessions at once, for example separate frontend, backend and test sessions, and the app can also search the web and chat with Claude, GPT or Gemini models, including custom endpoints. The architecture keeps the session on the DashVox backend instead of the phone, so it continues when the screen is off or the app is closed, a known weakness of plain SSH apps on iOS. The backend can be self-hosted for free on a Java 21 server where data stays local, or replaced by DashVox Cloud Ultimate, a managed VM with pre-configured agents. An Enterprise tier covers seats, budgets, SSO and admin controls. Among alternatives, it sits between cloud AI sandboxes, which run in disposable copies of a repo, and mobile SSH terminals, which demand reading and typing. DashVox works against the real machine with its running services and uncommitted changes, trading screen-based precision for hands-free access.

In Settings, open SSH Profiles and connect the machine that runs Claude Code or Codex.
  4. 4Speak a request
Open a chat on the phone, in CarPlay or in driving mode, and say what to start, such as running tests or checking session status.

  • Free self-hosted backend keeps code and data on your own machine, with no account neededAI
  • Works with Claude, GPT and Gemini, with custom endpoints and mid-conversation model switchingAI

Cons

  • Android app is not released yet, so only iPhone users can use it todayAI
  • Voice-only review of diffs and code is less precise than reading them on a screenAI
