What is Powabase?

Powabase is an open source, Supabase-based Postgres backend for AI apps. Each project gets isolated Postgres, auth and storage, plus document RAG, tool-using agents and visual workflows behind one REST API.

Powabase is a backend platform for applications that need retrieval and agents alongside a conventional database. Each project receives its own Postgres instance, authentication, object storage, realtime and dedicated compute, and everything is reachable through a single REST API. It builds on the Supabase stack, so PostgREST, row-level security and pgvector are part of the foundation rather than add-ons. The AI layer is what separates it from a plain backend-as-a-service. Uploaded PDFs, images, office files or URLs are extracted, chunked, embedded and indexed automatically, with vector, full-text and hybrid search available over the results. Agents follow a ReAct pattern, can combine several LLMs with knowledge bases and tools, stream over SSE, and keep their sessions in the project's own Postgres. Tools can be built in, such as web search and code execution, or added over HTTP or MCP, with human approval available for sensitive calls. A visual workflow builder with a natural-language copilot turns multi-step flows into callable HTTP endpoints. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can drive the platform through an installable skill or an MCP server. Powabase suits developers and small teams building support bots, document assistants or internal tools who would otherwise assemble a vector database, an agent framework and glue code beside a database. Teams that only need a database and auth are better served by plain Supabase, as the vendor itself acknowledges. Deployment is flexible: a managed cloud, a self-hosted Docker Compose stack under Apache-2.0 for a single project, or a Kubernetes edition for enterprises with support and SLAs. Users bring their own LLM keys, which keeps model costs and compliance decisions in their hands.

How do you use Powabase?

  1. 1Create a Powabase account
Sign up on the managed cloud to provision a project in seconds, or choose the self-hosted route if you prefer your own infrastructure.

  2. 2Read the platform overview
Skim the docs to understand how projects, the database, RAG pipeline, agents and workflows fit together behind the REST API.

  3. 3Connect your coding agent
Install the Powabase skill or add the MCP server so a tool like Claude Code can set up retrieval and agents from a plain description.

  4. 4Upload documents to a knowledge base
Add PDFs, images, office files or URLs inside the project. They are extracted, embedded and indexed automatically for search.
  5. 5Define an agent and call it
Create an agent with a model, your knowledge base and any tools, then call it through the streaming REST endpoint from your application.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Bundles RAG, agents and workflows with Postgres, auth and storage, replacing a separate vector database and agent frameworkAI
  • Every project runs on its own isolated stack, avoiding shared logical databases and noisy-neighbor effectsAI
  • Apache-2.0 licensed, with a one-command Docker Compose self-host option and no account requiredAI
  • Coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can drive it through a skill or MCP serverAI
  • Documents are extracted, embedded and indexed on upload, with vector, full-text and hybrid searchAI

Cons

  • The self-hosted Docker Compose version covers a single project only, so multi-project setups need the managed cloud or EnterpriseAI
  • Cloud pricing is not shown on the homepage, so costs must be checked on the separate pricing pageAI
  • Users must supply their own LLM keys, so model spending is a separate bill to manageAI
  • Kubernetes deployment with SLAs and support is reserved for the Enterprise tierAI
  • Benchmark and speed figures are vendor-reported, and teams needing only a database gain little over SupabaseAI
