What is Quill Reading for Evidence?

Quill Reading for Evidence replaces multiple-choice reading quizzes with nonfiction texts and AI-coached writing prompts. Students complete because, but, and so sentence stems, revise up to five times, and teachers see scored reports. Built for grades 8 to 12 in English, social studies, and science.

Quill Reading for Evidence is a literacy tool from Quill that swaps multiple-choice comprehension checks for open-ended writing. Each activity pairs a high-interest nonfiction passage with sentence stems that students complete using the connectives because, but, and so. To finish a stem well, a student has to understand the text, then express a cause and effect or claim and counterclaim in their own words. Passages sit at roughly an 8th to 9th grade reading level and range from culture and society questions (should schools set grade requirements for student athletes?) to interdisciplinary science on machine learning and coral reefs, to world history. Activities are designed for grades 8 through 12 and typically take 15 to 20 minutes. The feedback loop is the core of the product. A student highlights text, drafts a response, and receives targeted coaching from an AI Feedback Bot. If the answer is vague, the bot points back to the passage and asks for a specific reason or statistic. Only after the ideas are accurate and evidence-based does it move on to grammar and spelling corrections, including mini-lessons on commonly confused words. Students can revise each sentence up to five times. Quill is candid that the AI is not always correct, and the feedback is not generated cold: curriculum developers write custom feedback categories for every text and prompt, and the bot sorts each response into the matching category. Teachers get a completion report showing each student's score and their responses to every prompt, which makes the tool useful for warm-ups, small-group support, or discussion starters. The library is optional to align with free curricula such as WordGen Weekly, OER Project world history, and aiEDU's AI literacy course, and a free teacher handbook covers integration strategies. It suits middle and high school English, social studies, and science classrooms, plus English language learner support. Against multiple-choice reading platforms, the trade-off is depth over speed: open-ended writing takes longer to complete and longer to review, and the fixed sentence stems leave less room for extended essays.
