What is Rokoko?

Rokoko is a dance generator tool. Rokoko Vision turns ordinary video into skeletal animation using an AI solver inside Rokoko Create. Clips are cleaned and retargeted in Rokoko Studio, then exported as FBX or BVH for Blender, Unreal, Unity and similar tools.

Rokoko Vision is the AI motion capture component of Rokoko Create, a browser based platform for generating and refining character animation. The tool extracts body motion from ordinary video footage: a performer records a take with any camera, uploads the file, and a monocular AI solver reconstructs the skeleton movement. The rebuilt 3.0 solver is the headline change, promising cleaner data and faster processing than the original Vision release. Text-to-motion generation sits alongside video capture in the same workspace, so animators can produce motion from a written prompt as well as from footage. Captured clips move into Rokoko Studio, the desktop application where the data is reviewed, edited, looped, smoothed and retargeted onto a custom character. Export happens from Studio as .FBX or .BVH, with support for common skeletons such as HIK, Mixamo and UE5 Manny. The files open in Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity, Cinema 4D, Maya, Houdini, MotionBuilder and iClone, which covers most of the real pipeline targets a small studio or solo animator will encounter. Dual camera capture and live webcam recording were removed in 3.0; the workflow now assumes you shoot first and upload after. The audience is indie developers, 3D artists, VFX generalists and film or game teams that need usable body animation without buying hardware. The free tier includes 30 seconds of video processing per month, and the Basic plan raises that to 600 seconds, which Rokoko frames as roughly four times the processing of comparable tools at the same price. In the wider Rokoko lineup, Vision is the entry point: the Smartsuit Pro II, Smartgloves II and Face Capture handle cases where inertial tracking, finger data or multi performer capture matter. Vision's own documentation concedes that occlusion, single performer recordings and the lack of finger tracking are real limits, so it is best treated as previsualization and low to mid fidelity production support rather than a replacement for a suit.

How do you use Rokoko?

  1. 1Create a Rokoko account and open Rokoko Create
Sign up through the Rokoko ID portal, then open Rokoko Create in a browser. The free Starter tier activates immediately with 30 seconds of Vision processing per month.
  2. 2Shoot a clean reference video
Record the performance with any camera. Keep the full body in frame, use even lighting and avoid anything that hides the limbs, since the solver needs a clear view to estimate joint positions.
  3. 3Upload the footage for processing
Drop the video file into Rokoko Create and let the AI solver run. Processing takes a short wait rather than playing back live, so plan takes in batches.
  4. 4Clean and retarget in Rokoko Studio
Send the capture to Rokoko Studio to review, trim, loop and smooth the motion. Basic and above add custom character import and retargeting onto your own rig.
  5. 5Export as FBX or BVH
Pick a skeleton such as HIK or Mixamo and export. Import the file into Blender, Unreal, Unity or another supported 3D application to finish the shot.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No suit, markers or special clothing needed: any camera and a clean video file are enoughAI
  • Exports FBX and BVH across HIK, Mixamo and UE5 Manny skeletons, so files drop into standard 3D pipelinesAI
  • Video-to-motion and text-to-motion share one workspace, with editing and retargeting in Rokoko StudioAI
  • Processing allowance at the Basic tier is generous relative to competing AI mocap servicesAI
  • Free plan with 30 seconds monthly makes it easy to test on a real take before payingAI

Cons

  • No finger tracking, so hand animation still needs Smartgloves or manual keyingAI
  • Occluded limbs and performers leaving frame degrade tracking quality noticeablyAI
  • One performer per recording; no convincing multi actor captureAI
  • Post processing is required, so this cannot drive real-time avatars or live virtual productionAI
  • Live webcam and dual camera capture were removed, forcing a record-then-upload workflowAI
