What is Supercut?

Supercut is an on-device AI video editor for the browser and desktop. Type an edit in plain English and it reframes, captions, grades, cleans audio and exports, all without uploading a single frame. A multitrack timeline, version branching and folder batching cover the cases the prompt bar cannot.

Supercut is a video editor that runs entirely inside the browser, with an optional native desktop build for Mac and Windows. The premise is simple and unusual: your footage is decoded, edited and exported locally through WebAssembly, so nothing is sent to a server. Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM file up to 4GB and it opens without an upload bar. The AI layer only ever receives your written request, the transcript of what is said in the clip and its sound levels, both computed on your device, plus a few low resolution frames if you explicitly enable that. Disconnect the wifi and editing still works. The main interface is a chat box. Requests like "make it vertical for tiktok", "add auto-captions" or "kill the background noise" map onto more than 40 tools: trimming, face tracked reframe for any aspect ratio, colour grades, audio cleanup, speed changes from 0.25x to 4x, face blur, picture in picture and multi-clip stitching via @-mentions. Captions come from Whisper running locally, with word-level timing, 19 languages and automatic language detection. Every line is editable before burn-in, and the .srt can be exported instead. Each prompt forks a new version rather than overwriting the last, so earlier takes stay available to branch from. When prompts are not enough, a Studio tab offers a real multitrack timeline with video, text and audio lanes, frame accurate trims and waveforms on the clips. A Director drafts proposed actions against a scratch copy for review before applying, and deleting words from the transcript cuts the corresponding video. Screen recording with webcam, cursor redraw, auto-zoom and drawn backdrops sits alongside, with batch folder processing for shoots that arrive as dozens of clips. Independent editors, social teams and creators working with confidential or embargoed footage are the obvious audience, since unreleased material never leaves the machine. The trade-off is reach: folder batching requires Chrome, Edge or the desktop app, auto-zoom and system audio capture are desktop-only, and the desktop download is the route to native 4K playback. Against cloud editors such as CapCut, the differentiator is privacy and the absence of upload waits rather than a wider effects library.

How do you use Supercut?

  1. 1Drop a clip into the browser editor
Open the site in any modern browser and drag in an MP4, MOV or WebM file up to 4GB. It loads locally, so there is no upload progress bar and no account required to start.
Supercut — Drop a clip into the browser editor
  2. 2Describe your first edit in the chat box
Type what you want in ordinary language, for example make it 9:16 for reels or trim the first 5 seconds. The editor maps the request onto its tool set and returns a finished version.
  3. 3Fix the captions before burning them in
Turn on auto-captions and Whisper transcribes the audio on your machine, detecting the language automatically. Correct any misheard words in the transcript, then pick a style, size and colour or export the .srt alone.
  4. 4Switch to Studio for frame-accurate work
Open the Studio tab for a multitrack timeline with video, text and audio lanes. Trim and split by hand, cut by deleting sentences from the transcript, or ask the Director for a proposal and review it before applying.
  5. 5Install the desktop app for heavier jobs
Download the Mac or Windows build for native 4K playback, auto-zoom on screen recordings and system audio capture. It runs the same zero-upload editor and can drive an MCP client on loopback.
Supercut — Install the desktop app for heavier jobs
  6. 6Export for your platform
Choose an export preset for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, X, Discord or GIF. The first export is free and unwatermarked; unlimited exports need a Pro or Lifetime licence.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Footage is decoded, edited and exported locally, so nothing is uploaded and the editor keeps working offline.AI
  • Plain language prompts cover 40+ operations including reframe, captions, grades, audio cleanup and face blur.AI
  • Whisper captions run on-device with word-level timing, 19 languages and an editable transcript.AI
  • Every prompt forks a version, so earlier edits stay available to branch from instead of being overwritten.AI
  • The free tier allows editing and one watermark-free export without an account, and a one-time lifetime licence exists.AI

Cons

  • Folder batching needs Chrome, Edge or the desktop app, so Safari and Firefox users lose a headline feature.AI
  • Auto-zoom on screen recordings and system audio capture are desktop only; the browser recorder is more limited.AI
  • On-device processing makes performance depend on the machine, and the 4GB per-clip ceiling will not suit long-form projects.AI
  • The AI plans edits from transcript and sound levels rather than watching the footage, so visual judgement stays manual unless frame sampling is switched on.AI
  • Effects are aimed at social short-form; there is no evidence of multi-cam editing, keyframed motion graphics or professional colour management.AI
