What essay generators do
An essay generator takes a topic, a prompt or an assignment brief and returns structured written text: an outline, a thesis, body paragraphs and a conclusion. Some also add citations, paper search, AI detection checks or a humanizer that rewrites the output so it reads less mechanical. They are used mostly by students, but also by teachers preparing model answers and by writers who need a quick first draft to edit.
These tools replace the blank page and the early drafting stage. They do not replace reading sources, checking claims or deciding what the essay should argue, and a generated draft still needs a human pass for accuracy and voice.
How to choose an essay generator
Start with cost. Free essay generators exist, but many limit length, daily runs or exports, and some only offer a free trial before a subscription. Check the pricing label on each listing before investing time in a draft.
Next, decide how much structure you need. If the assignment comes with a rubric, a tool that reads the rubric will fit better than one that works from a bare topic. If the essay needs sources, look for built-in citations or paper search, because unsourced text creates more work later.
Consider the checks around the draft as well. Built-in AI detection and humanizer features matter if the text will be reviewed by an instructor. Finally, think about scope: some tools only produce essays, while others also write articles and stories or translate text, which helps if the same tool must cover several kinds of writing.

Common questions
Are there free essay generators?
Yes. Essay-Builder.AI is listed as free, and Textero.ai has a free tier alongside paid plans. Freemium and trial tools such as Verla and MyEssayWriter AI let you test output before paying, though limits vary by tool.
Can an essay generator add citations?
Some can. EssayDone lists citations and paper search among its features, which helps tie claims to sources. Any generated reference should still be checked against the original paper before it goes into submitted work.
Will the text pass an AI detector?
No tool can guarantee that. Verla and EssayDone include humanizer features aimed at this, but results vary, and rewriting the draft in your own words is the most reliable approach.
When to look elsewhere
If a draft exists and needs its wording changed, a Paraphrasing Tool or Text Rewriter category is the better fit. If the goal is to test whether text looks machine-written, the AI Detector category is built for that check, and the Grammar Checker category suits final proofreading.
